Cornelius Lanczos is one of the greatest mathematicians. This I knew before watching this video.
What I didn’t know is that he is also a great orator. Listening to him speak about mathematics is captivating.
I started this rather old video thinking it will take no more than 5 minutes. It turned out even 1 hour wasn’t enough.
I like the passion in Lanczos’ words. You can tell he understands things very deeply. He also seems to know about a lot of things. He believes mathematics is most useful when applicable. He also thinks that “less is more” when it comes to education.
Lanczos’ genius is obvious in this video. It is clear his savviness goes beyond books and articles he wrote. This is rare. Not all brilliant mathematicians and scientists can orally convey their genius in a way that inspires others. Only a few can.
